We recently took a final "babymoon" trip as a family of three to Prague, Czech Republic. Living overseas, it can take months and months to get a newborn's passport, so since we'll have to stay within the confines of Germany after he's born, it was kind of our last chance to cross the border for the next little while. (I know, I know, first world problems, right?)
We treated it as a redemption trip of sorts, since we had passed through previously on our
epic European road trip, but it had rained the entire time and was pretty miserable. This time, we planned to drive and stay from Monday to Friday, and it turned out to be absolutely fantastic.
We usually try to cram in as many destinations as possible when we travel, and it can become a little stressful and feel like not enough time in each place. But this trip, we really got to enjoy what one huge city had to offer, and it definitely felt like quality over quantity for once. We had such a sweet time as a family, and a ton of quality time for Nic and I to talk and focus on each other, which was much needed and welcomed!
Food Report From a Couple of Fatties
As always, most of our adventure and exploration of Prague included food of some kind. The first morning we walked around the corner to this breakfast place that had yummy coffee and amaaaaazing Eggs Benedict and stuffed French toast. It had a super cozy interior with couches to sit on and I definitely recommend it if you're staying in the area. It's not a terribly long walk from the Charles Bridge.

This place was so good that we went back twice and could've gone even more. With twists on typical Czech food and low-ish prices, Lokál was our go-to when we wanted to get out of the rain and enjoy a few snacks (and half liter Czech beer for $1.40 - for Nic). It has a daily rotating menu that will make you want to try every single thing. We especially liked the fried cheese and venison with bread dumplings to sop up every drop of sauce. There are a few different locations, but we went to one that isn't so crowded and it was a chill spot to relax and play cards, which we loved. The waitress even went out of her way to bring Thom crayons and paper.

The boy - happy and entertained. |
Our one splurge meal was going to a Brazilian steakhouse, because if you know us at all, you know that unlimited food is our dream come true. It was a little pricey but worth it as a rare treat, with really friendly service and high quality meat. Located in Old Town, it's very central if afterward you want to walk off what you just consumed. We made a reservation and ate at 3pm, which thankfully made it not very crowded!
One word of advice I can give to save some cash is to seek out places with a lunch menu. The exchange rate and Czech currency can be really hard to understand, so a tour guide told us what a good value and equivalent would be and we based our search on that. We stumbled upon this Czech restaurant on our way to a farther, different one and were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and cheap so we were able to try a few different things, and the atmosphere was once again relaxed so we pulled out the deck of cards again.

How to Enjoy Prague as an Invalid, a Toddler & a Beached Whale
We walked a ton during our visit (Had to work off all that fried cheese)!! Prague is a very walkable city, which for us this time was both good and bad. Bad for me because being 9 months pregnant makes me sore and have to pee every time I walk, and bad for Nic because he ended up hurting his foot in bad shoes after the first or second day. We ended up walking 9+ miles every day so we just had to have a much slower pace than we are used to. There was only one day of rain and that's when we could duck in somewhere for coffee/beer.

My cute boys! |
I always recommend trying out a free walking tour no matter where you travel, and we ended up going on a Prague Castle tour as well as an Old Town tour. We lucked out with guides and had wonderful experiences with
Discover Prague Tours. I learned a ton of interesting facts about the city and history!

Seeing the castle has been on my bucket list for a long time! |
As far as kid-friendly and family travel, we had no problems using a stroller around the city, though having a jogging stroller was very helpful for all the cobblestones. We didn't have any issues bringing Thom (who is 2.5) anywhere, and most places we found were accommodating with a high chair and/or activities. There were a number of great parks and playgrounds strewn about the city, which was a nice option when we were tired of walking and wanted Thom to run off some energy. We found one right on the river that had a beautiful view.

All in All
I recommend visiting Prague for a few days if you're able. Going during the week in March was a happy balance of nice weather with not so many tourists. There's so much to see - so take it at a slow pace and don't miss out on the incredible history, architecture, and cuisine it has to offer.
